people in the united states tend to disregard may day, also known as international workers' day, for a variety of reasons- apathy, indifference, fear, ignorance, fatigue, etc. it all began in 1886 and is still an important day all over the world, filled with public demonstrations against the oppression of big business and government. here in tucson there will be a march, beginning in the parking lot of the casino ballroom, 437 e. 26th st. folks will start gathering there at 9, march leaves at 10 for armory park. we’ll get to armory park by 11 and there will be a rally with speakers, music, and whatever other craziness y’all want to bring. ☺
many people don’t realize that may day is OUR day to speak out to rise up, rise against. there are demonstrations all over the world, in most major cities in the united states. find one- go to it. if there isn’t one in your town- do something!
readings: from karga fantasma’s blog post on the ICE raids in south tucson a few days ago, civil disobedience by henry david thoreau, a nice little poem about why people in nazi germany turned blind eyes to the plight of the jews.
played a 2006 interview from amy goodman talking to historian james green, who wrote a book about the haymarket riots. also played a clip by mumia abu jamal about may day.
love!
