The Difficult Listening Hour playlist for 12/12/2008
This show is about guns, and was pre-recorded in northeastern Bolivia in a palm-frond hut where some community members of a small group of villages have set up a tiny radio station. They are part of coalition of social movements fighting the regional landlords and business leaders over environmental degradation and political autonomy.
I'm here doing a story for a Mexican news magazine called Mas Importante. It is hot and muggy and the air is thick with insects and smoke from fires in the fields near by. The people are burning grass so the thugs from the city can't find their way and can be ambushed more easily. At first, they thought my long microphones that I use for making field recordings were rifles of some kind. Luckily I was able to explain their real purpose before a dangerous misunderstanding escalated.
This program this week is about more than just guns, of course, but also about force, and cops, and colonialism, and violence.
